THE TIME TO INVEST IN ALTERNATIVE ENERGY IS NOW
Federal Grant Program Offering 30% Of Project Cost Set To Expire on December 31st, 2010

BREWERTON, NY
. - The message is clear - if you have been considering adding a wind, solar heating, or a photovoltaic solar system for your home or small business, you need to act today.

“The typical person who is considering alternative power often looks to find the best grant programs or tax credits that can help them save money on the project installation.” says Owen Pugh, owner of Alternative Power Solutions of NY, LLC. “If you have been debating whether or not to start a solar project you need to act now because the 30 percent

federal grant window is only available until December 31st.” he continued.

As part of the Treasury grant program that began in February 2009, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, residential or commercial customers who start a solar project before the end of 2010 will receive a rebate check within 60 days of the project’s completion.

According to the US Department of the Treasury website, to qualify for the grant, either a large enough part of the

construction of the solar installation must be completed or 5 percent of the cost must be incurred. According to Pugh, the paperwork can be filed and the project can be put into motion prior to December 31st with the actual ground breaking happening in 2011.

According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development your home’s value rises $20,000 for every $1000 in reduced yearly electricity cost.

So, it's math time! Let’s say you have APS install a 4.6KW solar system that costs you $12,769 after all of the state rebates and tax credits and financing charges. For illustration purposes let’s also assume the system will reduce your $100/month average electric bill to an average of $12/month, saving you $88.00 per month. So what are your benefits to your home’s value?

  • First of all, you can brag about the buyer having a $12/month electric bill. That should be attractive.
  • Per the Department of Energy, you’ll see an increased home value of $88 x 12 = $1056/year electric savings, which equals a little more than $20,000 added to your home value! Cool! But there’s more:
  • In New York, by law, the State tax assessor can’t raise the value of your home based on a solar energy improvement for a period of 15 years. So that’s more money saved while you’re in the home.
  • If you’ve financed financed through a home equity loan, you get to write off the loan’s mortgage interest.

Cortland Family Eliminating Heat & Light Bills Using Alternative Energy
The Hansen family enjoys the financial benefits of combining solar energy sources.

CORTLAND, NY. - Jerri and Richard Hansen of Cortland won’t be paying an expensive propane or electric bill as the weather begins to turn colder thanks to the energy created by the combined efforts of their solar hot water heating system and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The Hansen family was like any other family in central New York up until a few months ago - paying their electric bill every month and watching as the cost of heating their home in the colder months increased with every passing season. Concerned about the yearly increase in the cost of electricity they contacted Alternative Power Solutions of New York, LLC about the possibility of installing a windmill on their property to generate electricity.

When their home was being constructed in 2007, Jerri and Richard had alternative energy in mind. Originally from Alaska, they were no strangers to a cold winter and the benefit of alternative fuels. “We built our home with a south-aligned roof, radiant in-floor heating, a 95% gas efficient furnace and R-23 insulation in the walls.” said Richard. “Adding wind or solar was the next logical step in the process.” he added.

The Hansens met with Owen Pugh, owner of APS to conduct a free energy evaluation on the property to determine which type of alternative power would best suit their needs. After reviewing the results of the evaluation it was recommended that they invest in a solar hot water heating system aimed at covering 100% of the cost of their hot water needs and 85% of their space heating needs.
